Antioxidants and Free Radicals:

Antioxidants are defined as substances that block or inhibit destructive oxidation reactions.  These so called "anti-aging" nutrients prevent chemical damage (via oxidation) to our body's many cells.  This is extremely important as research has shown that oxidative damage to cells and biomolecules is directly correlated with the occurrence of disease.

But what is a free radical?

Well, without going into a chemistry lesson, free radicals can be thought of as unstable molecules that react quickly with other (healthy) compounds in the body.  They try to steal electrons from healthy cells and disrupt the integrity and function of a healthy cell.

At times, free radicals arise normally during metabolic processes within the body.  For example, the body's immune system's cells generate free radicals to combat viruses and bacteria.  However, environmental factors like pollution, cigarette smoke, herbicides, and highly refined and processed foods can also spawn free radicals; and this is where a potential problem can occur.
